BERKELEY - No. 45-ranked California men's tennis senior Nick Andrews went undefeated in all matches at the 2011 Land Rover Napa Valley Tennis Classic to earn a wild card entry into a future USTA Pro Circuit Event, and the Norma Miner Award as the tournament's most outstanding player.
Andrews earned three victories in pool play to claim one of eight coveted spots in Sunday's shootout tournament where he defeated teammate Ben McLachlan to earn the weekend's title. First, he defeated USTA junior JC Aragone, 6-2, 7-5, on the first day. He then took out Tennessee's Ed Jones, 6-0, 6-1, and then completed his domination of his round-robin bracket with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Vanderbilt's Blake Bazarnik. Andrews cruised to a 10-8 win over UCLA's Warren Hardie in the shootout quarterfinals, and then he took a 10-7 win over the USTA's Alexios Halebian.
In the final, he defeated McLachlan, 10-7 for the championship. Andrews also went 2-0 in doubles matches, once with McLachlan, and once with junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt as the No. 5-ranked duo in the nation.
