Men's Swimming Enters Olympic Trials

June 23, 2012

An impressive 35 Golden Bears will be representing California's men's swimming and diving team at the June 25-July 2 USA Olympic Swimming Team Trials held at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb. Among those 35 athletes competing in Omaha will be Nathan Adrian, who swam for Cal from 2007-11, and is the nation's top seed entering the meet in both the 50 (21.55) and 100-meter (long course) freestyle (48.05). Adrian is the No. 1 seed in the 100 free ahead of the legendary Michael Phelps (48.08).

Adrian concluded his collegiate career by propelling the Bears to the 2011 NCAA team title, capturing five NCAA crowns - the 50-yard freestyle, 100 free, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and 400 free relay. He also won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 as a member of the United States' 400 free relay, and ended up garnering five individual national crowns and was part of six NCAA championship relays during his years at Cal.

Of the 35 Bears swimming for a chance to compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games, 10 are former Cal athletes, 19 are current members of coach David Durden's squad, and six will be joining the Bears in the fall of 2012. Several of Cal's competitors in Omaha have been training under Durden, associate head coach Greg Meehan and strength coach Nick Folker, at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Other Bear notables in Omaha include freestyler Anthony Ervin (2000-03), who won the gold medal in the 50 free at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia before taking a break from competitive swimming in 2003. Ervin is now back among the nation's top sprinters and will be competing in the 50 (seventh seed, 22.24) and 100 free. Another Cal standout in the 50 and 100 free will be Will Copeland (2005-08), who is seeded just behind Ervin with a time of 22.26 (eighth) in the 50 free.

Additional members of the Bear swimming family seeded in the Top 10 entering the Olympic Trials are - Sean Mahoney (2008-10) seeded fourth in the 200 breast (2:11.47), David Russell (2006-09) seeded seventh in the 100 back (54.22), incoming freshman Jacob Pebley from Corvallis, Ore. seeded eighth in the 200 backstroke (1:58.30), junior Tom Shields seeded ninth in the 100 fly (52.62), freshman Seth Stubblefield seeded 10th in the 200 fly (1:59.15) and incoming freshman Josh Prenot from Orcutt, Calif. seeded 10th in the 400 IM (4:18.44).
