FRESNO, Calif. - The California men's cross country team won the Fresno Invitational Saturday with 25 points, while the Cal women took fourth with 85 points.
The Bear men outdistanced a field of seven teams with host Fresno State finishing second with 62 points. Nevada won the 10-team women's race with 57 points, while San Jose State was second with 61 points.
Cal junior Bolota Asmerom won the men's five-mile race in a time of 25:30, with teammate senior Peter Gilmore finishing second in 25:44. Sophomore Brian Cooke also had a strong performance for the Bears, finishing fifth in 26:17.
On the women's side, Cal senior Christy Villa won her second-consecutive race this season, clocking in at 17:54 at the Woodward Park Course. Nevada's Carlsen finished second in 18:00.
The Bears next travel to the Aggie Invitational in Davis, Calif., Sept. 25.
