Villa Wins Women's Race at Nevada Invitational

SPARKS, Nev. - California's Christy Villa won the women's race Saturday at the Nevada Invitational cross country meet. The Golden Bear newcomer edged Stanford's Laura Turner by three seconds, finishing the 5-K course in 18:44.

It was the second year in a row the California men's and women's cross country teams kicked off their season at the Nevada Invitational at Hidden Valley Regional Park. Both squads placed second, each with a team score of 49 points.

Thomas Marley led a contingent of seven Cardinal runners to finish in the Top 10 as Stanford captured first place in the men's 4-mile race. The Cardinal finished with 15 points as they seized the first six places, with their lowest finisher coming in eighth. Marley took top individual honors with a time of 20:51.

Stanford also secured the women's title, with five of their six runners in the top 10 for a team score of 27 points. The Bears narrowly edged Nevada, which finished third with 50 points.

The Bears next race is at the Fresno Invitational, Sept. 18 at Woodward Park.
