Berkeley, Calif. - The California men's tennis team was impressive in their first dual matches of the season this year defeating Saint Mary's 6-0, and Santa Clara 7-0, Saturday at the Channing Courts on the campus of the University of California Berkeley.

After and hour delay due to water on the courts, the Bears wasted no time in their first match against the visiting Saint Mary's team. Cal's Erik Dmytruk was the first to put a point on the board for the Bears by defeating Boris Vallejo 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Things just kept rolling from there as the Bears Robert Kowalczyk, Scott Kintz, Adrian Barnes, Ben Miles and David Tzou swept the rest of the line-up over the Gaels, giving Cal their first dual match victory of the season. The two teams did not take part in doubles play.

In their second match of the day, Cal disposed of Santa Clara in equally impressive fashion with the Bears sweeping all nine matches. In singles, Cal's John Paul Fruttero, Dmytruk, Kowalczyk, Kintz, Hiro Nakamura and Chris Lewis clobbered the Broncos, dropping only one set between them the entire day. In doubles, Cal's Dmytruk and Kintz made fast work of Lars Nelson and Marcell Hlousek, beating them, 8-3 in the No. 1 slot. The Bears No. 2 tandem of Miles and Kowalczyk defeated Ryan Livesay and Rick Ruso, 9-8, while the No. 3 duo of Lewis and Fruttero also defeated the Broncos' Scott Watters and Adam Lewis with a score of 9-8. The win over the Bronco's gives the Bears a 2-0 cumulative dual match record on the season.

The Bears will be back in action on Feb. 3 when they travel to Dallas, Texas to take part in the Rolex Indoor Championships.
