BERKELEY - Freshman forward Joe Shipp scored 16 consecutive points during one stretch of the second half on his way to a 22-point night, leading California to an 80-46 rout of Washington State Thursday in Haas Pavilion.

With the win, Cal improved to 11-7 overall and 2-4 in the Pac-10, while Washington State fell to 5-11 and 0-7.

The Bears jumped out to a 13-2 lead and never looked back. After WSU closed to 13-6, Cal scored the next seven points for a 20-6 lead and the Bears were up, 36-20, at the half.

In the second half, Cal came out on a 10-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Donte Smith. Then, with 9:41 left, Shipp simply took over. Over the next 3:12, he hit a short jumper, a layup and four three-pointers, scoring 16 straight points. His run finally ended on a Solomon Hughes dunk that put the Bears ahead, 75-38.

The 34-point victory was Cal's largest in a Pac-10 game since the Bears beat Washington State, 98-57, on Feb. 23, 1973.

In addition to Shipp, who tied his career high, Nick Vander Laan had another double-double with 12 points and a personal-best 12 rebounds.

California vs. Washington State Post-Game Quotes

California Head Coach Ben Braun

General Comments:

"I really liked our effort and enthusiasm tonight. We played tonight at an intense level and aggressively. I thought Sean Lampley did a good job on Chris Crosby, and that's important because you don't want their best players getting going on you. I thought Lampley was a major factor guarding Crosby."

On Freshman Joe Shipp:

"Our post guys did a great job kicking the ball out of double-teams and finding (Joe) Shipp. It's a hard match-up when you can go inside and out. We're not out to look good individually, we're out to look good as a team, and I think we showed that tonight."

On the Bears' defense:

"It's about the defensive possession and how hard we worked on the defensive end. I thought when we took our time we got great shots. We stayed focused throughout each possession defensively."

Washington State Head Coach Paul Graham

General Comments:

"We didn't have it tonight and we got beat. The score is indicative of how we played tonight."

"I talked to our players after the game. I'm not going to dwell on it, but I don't want them to forget it. We don't have time to dwell on it. We've got to look to our next game on Saturday."
