BERKELEY - The UCLA Bruins proved they deserve their No. 5 national ranking tonight in Haas Pavilion. The Bruins won the Cal invite with ease having led the four-team meet from beginning to end and finishing with a total of 196.425. The Bruins were followed by California in second (192.175), UC Davis in third (187.550) and UC Santa Barbara in fourth (185.150).
UCLA took the top three spots in floor exercise, balance beam, vault and the all-around competition. The Bruins were led by senior Heidi Moneymaker, the defending vault national champion, who won all four events and the all-around competition with a whopping score of 39.775. The final tally is a school all-around record and includes a perfect 10.00 on vault, a handspring front layout with a half-twist. Junior Mohin Bhardwaj finished second on vault, bars, beam and the all-around. Bhardwaj placed third on floor behind teammate Onnie Willis.
Cal senior Leila Khoury placed fourth in the all-around competition after placing fifth on floor, tying for ninth place on beam, tying for third place with Lindsay Baker on bars, and finishing eighth on vault for a total of 38.800. Khoury's score of 9.750 on the uneven bars tied her season best.
Baker had a personal best in vault with a 9.750 but finished sixth in the event behind five Bruins. Genine Ishino bettered her season best on bars with a 9.700.
Davis was led by Ericka Ruelas (37.150) and Flora Bare (37.125) who finished sixth and seventh respectively in the all-around competition. Santa Barbara's Ryanne Strohm placed ninth in the all-around with a score of 36.100.
The Bears will travel to Palo Alto next weekend to take on cross-bay rival Stanford in Burnham Pavilion at 7:30 p.m.
