Women's Water Polo Rally Falls Just Short Against UCLA

Feb. 13, 2000

SAN DIEGO -- UCLA held off a late Cal rally to capture the 2000 UC San Diego Arena NoGrip Invitational title at UCSD's Canyonview Pool. To reach the final, each time pulled off upsets of previously unbeaten teams, setting up a surprising pairing in the Championship Game. UCLA routed top-ranked USC, 10-3, earlier in the day while Cal edged second-ranked Stanford, 5-4, to advance to the final. The Bruins edged the Bears, 6-5, to take the tournament title.

Cal goalie Fana Fuqua was named the tournament MVP, while UCLA was represented on the All-Tournament Team by Catharine von Schwarz and Erin Golaboski. Nina Wengst and Aniko Pelle of USC, Margie Dingeldein of Stanford and Inna Fedoseyeva of San Jose State rounded out the All-Tournament Team.

Host UC San Diego picked up its first victory of the young season with a 9-7 defeat of cross-town rival San Diego State in the ninth-place game.
