Berkeley, CA - The California Men's Tennis Team downed the visiting Oregon Ducks today, 5-2 in a close match played at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. The victory puts Cal at 4-0 overall, 1-0 in the Pac-10 while Oregon falls to 3-3, 0-1 in Pac-10 play.

Cal kicked off the afternoon in winning fashion, grabbing the first point of the afternoon from the Ducks by taking two of the three doubles matches. At the No. 1 doubles slot, the No. 21 ranked duo of Erik Dmytruk and Scott Kintz defeated Oregon's Guillermo Carter and Leslie Eisinga, 8-5. The victory was the duo's 14th on the year, giving them a team leading 14-3 record overall. At the No. 2 spot, Cal's John Paul Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk defeated Thomas Schneiter and Oded Teig, 8-6, to remain undefeated in dual match play. Unfortunately, Cal's duo of Chris Lewis and David Tzou did not fair as well, losing to Oregon's David Becker and Joaquin Hamdan, 9-8 (7-5) in their first match together this year..

In singles action, Cal's only losses of the afternoon came at the No. 1 and No. 3 spot where freshmen John Paul Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk fell to Oregon's Thomas Schneiter, 6-4, 6-4, and Oded Teig, 6-3, 6-4 respectively. The loss was the first for both Fruttero and Kowalczyk in dual match play. The Bears Erik Dmytruk was victorious at the No. 2 spot, downing Guillermo Carter, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4), in what turned out to be one of the most hard fought matches of the afternoon. The win was Dmytruk's first since losing to Roger Anderson of Georgia Tech on Feb. 11. At the No. 4 spot Scott Kintz defeated Leslie Eisinga, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to stay undefeated in dual match play, and capture his fourth victory in a row.
