BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team lost its first match of the season 5-2 on Saturday, Feb. 19 against Washington at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. The Bears fall to 4-1, 1-1 in conference play.
In singles play, No. 2 player Erik Dmytruk of Cal was the only Bear to come away with a victory on the afternoon, beating Washington's Andy Posavac in straight sets 7-6, 7-6. This was Dmytruk's second straight win of the weekend, and puts him at a team leading, 10-4 overall, and 4-1 in dual match play. It was another hard afternoon for Cal freshmen John Paul Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk as both were defeated in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots respectively for the second day in a row. In the No. 4 spot Scott Kintz lost his first dual match of the year to Jeremy Berman, 7-6, 7-5.
In doubles action, Cal's No. 1 tandem of Dmytruk and Kintz defeated Berman and Posavac 8-3, while Cal's No. 2 doubles team of Fruttero and Kowalczyk also notched a win for the Bears against Washington's Quatrochi and Strasberg by a score of 8-3. The victory for Dmytruk and Kintz, who are ranked No. 21 in the country, was their 15th on the year. Both the tandem's of Dmytruk/Kintz and Fruttero/Kowalczyk are undefeated in dual match play.
The Bears will not compete again until March 1 when they take on the Stanford Cardinal at 1:30 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Center on the Berkeley Campus.
