DAVIS, Calif. -- Brooke Spittler scored both her goals in the
first 11 minutes, staking 3rd-ranked California to a 4-0 lead and the
Golden Bears went on to take a 10-5 victory over No.8 UC Davis in a women's
water polo match played Saturday before 200 fans at Hickey Pool.
The Bears improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Aggies fell to 4-6.
Brenna Fleener and Collette Glinkowski each finished with three
goals for Cal, which finished with a 22-19 edge in shots.
Goalkeeper Fana Fuqua finished with eight saves for the Bears.
Five different UC Davis players had one goal each, while Karly
Watson had nine saves in a solid performance for the Aggies.
"Against a team like that, you can't make any mistakes," said Aggie
Coach Jamey Wright. "I wish the final score was a little more reflective of
the game. At the end of the game we had to take chances in going for the
steal and we were vulnerable."
Cal led 5-1 at halftime, but the Aggies pulled within 6-3
at the end of the third quarter. A goal by UCD's Kim Parker brought the
hosts within 7-4 with 4:09 left, and an ejection on the Bears gave the
Aggies a shot to pull closer. But Fuqua made a key stop and Julia Cesnik
scored at the other end for Cal to stop the Aggies' momentum.
