Berkeley, Calif. - The California men's tennis team returned to dual match play today against cross-bay rival Stanford. The Cardinal, who rank No. 1 in the nation, downed the Bears, 5-2. With the loss the Bears move to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in Pac-10 play, while Stanford remains undefeated at 9-0 and 3-0 in Pac-10 action.
Cal got things started on the right foot, taking two of the three doubles matches to score the first point of the afternoon. In the No. 1 doubles slot, Stanford's No. 1 ranked duo of Geoff Abrams and Alex Kim were too much for the Bears own No. 21 ranked duo of Scott Kintz and Erik Dmytruk, defeating them, 8-5. In the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, the Bears sported a new lineup thanks to the return of freshman Ben Miles from injury. Miles teamed with fellow freshman Robert Kowalczyk to defeat Stanford's Ali Ansari and Carter Morris, 9-8, in the No. 3 position. The victory puts the duo at 6-0 on the year and 2-0 in dual match play. At the No. 2 spot, things went down to the wire as John Paul Fruttero and David Tzou dispatched of the Cardinal's David Martin and Scott Lipsky, 9-8.
In singles action, Cal's only point of the day came off of Robert Kowalczyk's 6-4, 6-3, victory over Alex Ansari in the No. 5 slot. The win halts the freshman's losing streak at two and puts his overall record at 7-4 on the year. John Paul Fruttero made a strong showing in the No 1 slot, challenging Stanford's Alex Kim, the second-ranked player in the nation, to a three-set match. Fruttero dropped the first set, 6-4, and then battled back to take the second set, 7-5, before eventually losing the third set, 6-2. Sophomore Hiro Nakamura was the only other Cal player able to steal a set from the Cardinal in his 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 loss to Scott Lipsky.
The Bears will be back in action this weekend when they travel to the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament on La Jolla, Calif.
