The California men's tennis team returned to dual match play today against visitng Brigham Young University. The Bears snapped a their three-match losing streak while defeating the Cougars, 5-2. With the win the Bears move to 5-3 on the year and remain 1-2 in Pac-10 play.
The day did not get off to a great start for the Bears as BYU took two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Cal's only doubles victory came on court two where the freshman duo of Robert Kowalczyk and Ben Miles teamed up to defeat BYU's Nic Losee and Carlos Lozano, 8-5. The win puts the super frosh duo at an impressive 7-2 overall and 3-1 in dual match play.
In singles action, Cal made up for the lost doubles point by sweeping five of six singles matches to clinch the victory. The Bears only singles loss of the afternoon came at the hands of Carlos Lozano who beat Cal's Hiro Nakamura, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. Junior Erik Dmytruk (ranked 59th in the country) continued his reign of impressive play, defeating Bert Vilms in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot. The Edmonton, Alberta native is now 2-0 since moving into the No. 1 spot and has accumulated a team-best 12-5 record. Despite Dmyturk's exciting win, perhaps the most impressive play of the day came on court five where junior Scott Kintz obliterated BYU's David White, 6-1, 6-1. Kintz's record now stands at 7-7 overall.
The Bears will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on the Clemson Tigers, at 1:30 p.m,. at Hellman Tennis Center.
