The No. 48 California men's tennis won their second match in two days, upsetting the No. 33 Clemson Tigers by a score of 4-3 today at Hellman Tennis Center. The win moves the Bears to 6-3 overall while remaining 1-2 in Pac-10 play.
The Bears got the afternoon rolling on the right foot, capturing the doubles point by taking two of the three doubles matches. Cal's 25th-ranked duo of Erik Dmytruk and Scott Kintz scored a huge upset when they defeated No. 11 Josh Goffi and Darrin Knight of Clemson, 8-5 in the No. 1 spot. The super duo now moves to a team-best 16-6 record overall. On court three, Cal's John Paul Fruttero and David Tzou made fast work of Sandon Barth and Eric Cohn, downing the Clemson pair, 8-2.
In singles, the Bears captured the win by taking three of the six matches. Hiro Nakamura came up big for the Bears in the No. 3 spot, beating Brad Emendorfer, 6-4, 7-5 to clinch the victory for Cal. The Bears other victories came at the No. 2 spot where John Paul Fruttero defeated Tom Boniecki, 6-3, 6-2, and in the No. 4 spot where Robert Kowalczyk downed Luis Garcia in a three-set thriller, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
The Bears will be back in action again Saturday, March 25 when they travel across the bay to take on third-ranked Stanford at noon at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
