Stanford, Calif. -
The eighth-ranked Cal women's tennis team (14-5, 3-1 Pac-10) fell to top-ranked Stanford (21-0, 4-0 Pac-10), 5-4 yesterday at the Taube Tennis Stadium. The win puts the Cardinal in sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 conference and marks the third-straight victory over the Bears this season.
Stanford took control of the match in singles where they won four of six matches. Cal senior Amy Jensen won her third straight match and seems to have hit her stride again as of late, winning six of her last seven matches. The Brisbane, Australia native now needs only three more victories to total 100 victories in her career. The only other Cal player victorious in singles was senior Karoline Borgersen who knocked off Stanford's Gabriela Lastra, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot.
The day was not over for the Bears just yet as they mounted a comeback in doubles, winning two matches to tie the score at four apiece. Unfortunately Stanford proved to be too much on court one where the fifth-ranked duo of Marissa Irvin and Teryn Ashley knocked off Cal's seventh-ranked duo of Anita Kurimay and Karoline Borgersen to seal a Cardinal victory.
The Bears will be back in action this Friday when they host Arizona State, at 1:30 p.m. at Hellman Tennis Center.
