The fourth-ranked Cal women's tennis team lost their first match since March 26th this afternoon, falling to the eighth-ranked UCLA Bruins, 5-4 at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. With the loss the Bears move to 16-6 and 5-2 in the Pac-10 while the Bruins advance to 14-7 and 6-1 in Pac-10 play.
Things got off to a fairly even start as both teams took three singles matches, tying the score at three apiece heading into doubles. The Bears scored wins on courts two, three and six as Anita Kurimay, Karoline Borgersen, and Christina Fusano were victorious respectively. One of the Bears most heartbreaking losses of the day came on court three where Claire Curran could not hold off UCLA's Abigail Spears, losing 6-2, 5-7, 6-7(7-5).
UCLA's Annica Cooper and Petya Marinova quicly tallked a 8-2 victory over Jenny Lee and Emeka Mayes to begin doubles play. A Cal victory by Amy Jensen and Curran at the No. 2 spot brought the score to four all, allowing the final outcome to be decided in the No. 1 spot. Cal's Kurimay and Borgersen could not hold onto their early lead as UCLA's Amanda Basica and Sara Walker fought back to tie the score 5-5 before reeling off three quick points to seal the win, 8-5 and assure the 5-4 UCLA victory.
The Bears will be back in action for their final regular season match of the year against USC, at Hellman Tennis Center, beginning at noon.
