Berkeley, Calif. -
The fourth-ranked Cal women's tennis team closed out their regular season today by defeating visiting USC, 5-1 at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. The win moves the Bears to 17-6 overall and 6-2 in Pac-10 play.
The Bears dominated singles play, taking five out of the six matches to assure a Cal victory. Seniors Amy Jensen, Karoline Borgersen, and Claire Curran came up big on "senior day", grabbing wins on courts two, three, and four respectively. The 21st-ranked Jensen now needs only one more win to reach the 100-win career milestone. Fellow senior Borgersen displayed some of the most dominant play of the day, destroying 13th-ranked Jewel Peterson, 6-1, 6-0 in the third spot. After dropping the first set, 5-7, junior Anita Kurimay battled back to clinch the match for the Bears, defeating USC's Kara Warkentin, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. Kurimay's 26 victories are tops for the Bears this year.
No doubles matches were played as the outcome of the match was already decided.
The Bears will be in back in action next week when they travel to Ojai, CA for the Pac-10 Championships, Apr. 27-30.
