Freshman Julie Gardner scored with 1:16 in overtime to lead No. 1 ranked Stanford to a 3-2 victory over No. 2 ranked California Saturday in the championship match of the Northern California Regional Qualifier women's water polo tournament at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Cal had trailed Stanford, 2-0, entering the fourth period, but behind a goal from sophomore Brenna Fleener and a goal from senior Colette Glinkowski with 2:20 left in regulation, enabled the Bears to send the match into overtime.
Besides Gardner's match winning goal, she had the Cardinal's first goal in the opening period. Kris Koblik scored for Stanford in the third period. Cardinal goalie Jackie Frank had an impressive 15 saves.
Results of the other matches on Saturday included San Jose State defeating Hawaii, 3-2, UC Davis defeating Pacific, 8-7, UC Davis defeating San Jose State, 7-6 and Hawaii defeating Pacific, 10-6.
The results of the Northern California Regional Qualifier will dictate the seedings for the Collegiate National Championship May 5-7 in Indianapolis, IN.
