April 24, 2000

EUGENE, Ore. - Twenty-second ranked California is tied for third with UCLA after the first of three rounds at the Pac-10 Championship Monday at Eugene Country Club (par 72, 5557 yards). The Golden Bears fired a 13-over-par 301, putting them nine shots behind front runner USC (292). Arizona is second with an opening round 299.

Cal is looking to improve on last year's program-best finish of seventh at the conference meet. The Bears are currently ahead of nationally-ranked teams such as No. 4 Arizona State (312) and No. 6 Stanford (302).

The Bears were led by junior Cheryl Lala, who matched her season best round of 73. Lala is in seventh place, three shots behind UCLA's Amanda Moltke-Leth (70), who won last week's Peg Barnard California Collegiate. Sophomore Anne Walker fired a solid 74, tying for eighth with UCLA's Alicia Um.

The tournament continues with 18 holes of golf Tuesday and 18 holes Wednesday.
