WESTWOOD, Calif. -- The California women's tennis team upset the
fifth-ranked UCLA Bruins 6-3 Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis
Center. With the win, Cal improves to 14-4 overall, while UCLA drops to
11-7.
After pulling ahead 4-2 at the end of singles play, Cal clinched the
dual-match when the duo of Jenny Lee and Emeka Mayes defeated UCLA's Zana
Zlebnik and Petya Marinova 8-2 on court No. 3. UCLA's lone doubles win came
on court No. 2, where the tandem of Annica Cooper and Sara Walker upset the
No. 3 doubles team in the nation, Amy Jensen and Claire Curran, 8-6.
Earlier in the afternoon in the singles competition, the score was locked
at 2-2 before Cal pulled ahead to grab two close wins on courts No. 4 and 5.
UCLA's singles wins came on courts No. 1 and 3. In the top position, Walker,
who is ranked No. 6 in the nation, bageled Anita Kurimay 6-0 in the third
set after claiming the first set 6-4 and dropping the second 2-6. Court No.
3 also went the distance, with UCLA's Abigail Spears pulling out the win
6-2, 4-6, 6-1 over Curran.
The UCLA Bruins will be in action again next week when they host Washington
at 1:30 pm on Friday April 14. The following day, they face Washington State
at noon. Both matches will be held at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
