Cal Women's Water Polo Loses to UCLA, 5-3, at Nationals

The No. 2 ranked California women's water polo team (28-6) fell to No. 3 ranked UCLA, 5-3, in the semifinals of the Collegiate National Championship Saturday in Indianapolis, IN. The Bears will next face No. 1 ranked Stanford (27-5) in the third place match Sunday at 2 p.m. The Cardinal had lost to No. 4 ranked USC, 10-5, in the other semifinal match.
Cal had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period against UCLA, behind goals from sophomores Brenna Fleener and Julia Cesnik. The Bears added another goal in the second period on senior Kaliya Young's shot, but that was it for Cal's scoring. UCLA's Elaine Zivich scored two goals in the second period to get the Bruins within 3-2 at the half. Then UCLA dominated the second half, outscoring the Bears, 3-0, behind Zivich's goals in the third and fourth periods. Jessica Lopez added another goal for the Bruins in the third period. UCLA was 3-0 against Cal during the 2000 season.
