Cal Women's Water Polo Falls to Stanford at Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The No. 2 ranked California women's water polo team (28-7) fell to No. 1 ranked Stanford, 8-5, in the third-place match of the Collegiate National Championship Sunday in Indianapolis, IN. Earlier this season, the Bears had lost to the Cardinal in the championship matches of both the MPSF Tournament (6-4) and the Northern California Regional Qualifier (3-2 in overtime).

Cal had reached the third-place match by defeating Indiana, 12-4, and San Diego State, 7-2, on May 5. In the semifinals on May 6, the Bears were defeated by eventual national champion UCLA, 5-3.

Against Stanford, the Bears were led by senior Colette Glinkowski's three goals. Junior Beth Irwin and sophomore Brenna Fleener added a goal apiece for Cal. The Bears trailed the entire match.

Glinkowski finished her college career as Cal's all-time leading scorer in women's water polo, tallying 212 goals from 1997-2000. She had 58 goals during the 2000 campaign.

The Bears conclude the 2000 season with a 28-7 overall record and was 8-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Cal had finished fourth in the nation in 1999 as well.
