No. 5 Bears Water Polo Defeated by No. 1 Stanford

Oct. 6, 2001

Berkeley - The momentum of a four-game winning streak for the California Golden Bears (4-1, 1-1 MPSF) was halted today by the Stanford Cardinal (5-0, 3-0 MPSF), who defeated Cal 8-4 in Spieker Aquatics Complex on the UC campus this afternoon. The match counted in conference play.

Senior Spencer Dorin, who was easily the most vocal of the Bears throughout the day, put up two goals in the fourth quarter to lead the Bears in scoring. Senior Mike West and sophomore Attila Banhidy also scored for the Bears, who were held to a season-low four goals on the day by rival Stanford. Tim Kates started in goal for the Bears and put up a save in the first half before giving way to Russell Bernstein, who blocked two shots.

Freshman sensation Tony Azevedo once again led the way for Stanford, putting up three goals for the third consecutive time. Pasi Dutton and Jeff Nesmith scored two each for the Cardinal. Junior goalkeeper Nick Ellis notched two saves.

Cal plays No. 10 Pacific tomorrow. In their only other meeting of this season, Cal put up a baker's dozen on the Tigers, walking away with a 13-6 win in both team's opening game. The match will take place again in Berkeley, at the Spieker Aquatics Complex at noon.
