Berkeley, CA -
Cal and USC played each other to an almost virtual draw, but the Trojans took advantage of a late goal in overtime to defeat the Bears by a 9-8 count on Saturday morning. The Bears dropped to a 12-6 record (3-5 MPSF), while USC improved to a 11-5 mark for the season.
In a wild game in which there were thirteen ejections, including one on a goalie, Attila Banhidy continued his scoring tear, scoring four goals for the second time in as many days, including three scores in the first 11 minutes.
Daniel Lontay led the Trojans, netting six shots on the day.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Bears were scored on three times, putting them down by one goal. Cal later rallied to a 5-3 score, followed by a Trojan revival to put the score at 6-5 USC in the third period.
Cal goalie Russell Bernstein was ejected late in the first period, allowing Tim Kates to enter. Kates finished out the game, blocking seven shots on the day.
USC went up by a 7-6 score with 2:38 left in regulation, but Mike West came up large, tying up the game with just over a minute left on the match. In overtime, the Trojans held a 9-7 lead with 44 seconds left in the period. Banhidy came up large again, knocking in a goal with 19 second remaining. Cal would get the ball back with two seconds in the match, and although Joe Kaiser caught the goalie out of position, his shot bounced off the cross bar, ending the game.
Cal next plays at the Big Splash at Stanford. The next MPSF play comes at the conference tournament, which will be hosted by the Golden Bears at Berkeley.
