Berkeley - The Golden Bears were surprised by the aggressive play and tenecious defense of the Long Beach State 49ers, and came away with their fifth defeat of the season, 7-5. Cal drops to a 3-4 MPSF record, with just one more conference match to play this season.

The 49ers broke the ice first, converting a on their first shot attempt by Allard, who scored another to lead Long Beach with two goals on the game. Attilla Banhidy's goal with 3:12 remaining in the period failed to fire up the listless Bears, who trailed by a 4-3 count at halftime to the lower-ranked team.

Long Beach came out fired up in the third period, however, at one point scoring three unanswered goals, to dangle a 6-3 lead over the Bears up until the closing seconds of the third quarter. Despite the loss of M. Aguilar, who received a game ejection with 2:47 left in the quarter, the 49ers held the Bears without a goal until the end of the third, when scoring leader Spencer Dornin finally got one by Long Beach's Adolph to close the gap to two. Adolph ended the day with 10 saves.

The two teams exchanged goals in the fourth quarter, with senior Mike West scoring for the Bears, and Miller converting for the 49ers.

The Bears are back in action on Friday, when they will take on the Aggies of UC Davis. The game is a rematch of this season's 11-0 Bear win in Berkeley, but will be played at a neutral site (Solano JC). Cal comes home to take on USC on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

CAL TO HOST MPSF TOURNAMENT: The University of California will play host to the annual three-day MPSF men's water polo tournament this year, held Thanksgiving weekend at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. $25 covers admission for all three days, with the one day fee running $10. Students, youth and seniors can pay $13 for the three-day package, or the daily rate of $5.
