Box Score
BERKELEY -- Playing a near-perfect game, senior forward Sean Lampley scored 29 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and added six assists to lead California to an 82-66 victory over Washington Thursday night in Haas Pavilion.
Lampley, who moved into second place on Cal's all-time scoring list, made all eight of his shots from the floor and went 12-for-16 from the free throw line. He now has 1,664 points, just 25 behind Cal career leader Lamond Murray, who scored 1,688 points for the Bears.
With the win, Cal improved to 18-7 overall and 9-4 in the Pac-10, while UW fell to 9-17 and 3-11.
The Bears scored the first six points of the game on buckets by Shantay Legans, Joe Shipp and Solomon Hughes. Less than nine minutes into the contest, Cal took its first double-digit lead at 18-8 on another Hughes layup.
Lampley finished the first half with a double-double - 21 points and 10 boards. His final points came when he grabbed a rebound with four seconds left, raced down court and nailed a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer. Those three points pushed him past both Bob McKeen (1,654 points) and Kevin Johnson (1,655 points) and into second place on the Bear scoring list.
Cal led by at least 20 points for most of the second half and went up by 31 points at 80-49 with 3:07 left before the Bears pulled all their starters.
Lampley was not the only Cal player to have a perfect shooting night. Hughes, who gained his first start since early in the year for the injured Nick Vander Laan (sprained right ankle), had 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 at the line. Donte Smith also made all three of his attempts, including a pair of three-pointers, to total eight points.
Postgame Quotes
California Head Coach Ben Braun ~
"We had to come out and play hard. You never know how your team is going to play coming off a hard loss but we came out and did what we had to do tonight."
"When you're missing a guy like Nick Vander Laan, you need to come out and have a big game from your big men."
"Sean Lampley really stepped it up for us. I don't know of many guys in this league who can come out and get 29 points and 17 rebounds and do it in a winning fashion. You can't say enough about Sean's effort tonight."
"I thought our defense was good. This is a big test for us, putting up a key effort tonight against Washington and having to come back on Saturday to play a tough Washington State team. We know Washington State feels they should have beat us up in Pullman. We just have to come back out with another strong effort."
Washington Head Coach Bob Bender ~
"We knew that Cal was not going to take anything for granted tonight, and that's the way they came out and they set a tone. We certainly didn't help ourselves with some early missed shots, and then gave them transition baskets, which was the last thing that we could afford to do."
"When it comes down to it, they've got a lot of ways to beat you. But when Sean Lampley plays like that, that's a big difference. There used to be some things that you could do to slow him down or take away, but he's a complete scorer and a complete player. I think that when he has these kind of numbers, Cal's a very difficult to beat. They were very efficient tonight."
