BERKELEY, CA -
The No. 4-ranked women's water polo team (7-5, 1-1 MPSF) grabbed its second consecutive win today at the Spieker Aquatics Complex, downing the San Jose State Spartans, 11-5.
In their last meeting at the NorCal Invitational, the first tournament of the year, Cal came away with an 8-3 victory, Feb. 10. The story would be pretty much the same, as Cal had the upper hand the entire match, as seven players got on the scoreboard for the Bears.
Junior Brenna Fleener led all scorers with three goals, as she recorded her second hat trick of the season. The game was Cal's from the start, as the Bears scored on their first possession of the afternoon, on a shot from sophomore Laura Graham. Cal jumped to a 4-1 lead with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter on a two-meter shot from junior Julia Cesnik. Cesnik, who gained inside water on her defender at the hole-set, switched the ball from her right to left hand in an effortless move that put the Spartan goalie out of position. San Jose State's Christy Taylor cut down the Bears lead when she scored on the next possession, bringing the Spartans within two at the end of the quarter, 4-2.
The second quarter was all defense for both teams. The only goal of the quarter came on a Cal man-up advantage, where Brenna Fleener scored her first of her team-leading three goals. The Spartans tried to cut the lead, however, they could not get the ball past senior goalie Fana Fuqua who recorded two of her six saves in the second quarter.
From the start of the second half until early in the fourth quarter, Cal and San Jose State traded goals, however the Bears had put the game out of reach for the Spartans. Junior Amy Buehler got on the scoreboard for the Bears late in the fourth quarter after putting away a Chris Lane shot that rebounded off the cross bar. Sophomore Courtney Devenish scored the final goal of the game for the Bears in the fourth quarter with 1:07 remaining in the game.
The Bears will host No. 1-ranked Stanford tomorrow at the Spieker Aquatics Complex at 12 noon. The Cardinal enter the game undefeated on the season, having won the NorCal tournament and the UCSB tournament.
