March 31, 2001

HONOLULU, HI - Ericka Lorenz and Laura Graham each scored two goals to lead No. 4-ranked California women's water polo team to a 9-1 victory over No. 6-ranked Hawaii in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Golden Bears improve to 13-7 and 6-3 in conference play, while the Wahine fall to 14-6 and 1-5.

Julia Cesnik and Julie Arnold got the Golden Bears off to a quick start. Cesnik scored to break a scoreless tie with 3:16 left in the first period. Arnold added another goal with 1:01 left to build a 2-0 lead. Cal went on to score three more goals in the second and led 5-0 at halftime. The pesky Golden Bear defense kept Hawaii off-balance throughout the game. For the majority of the match, the Wahine looked sluggish and failed to muster any significant offensive attack. Junior Christi Bardecki scored the lone goal for Hawaii with 3:45 left in the game. Defensively, UH goalie Christa Tackaberry notched 6 saves and 3 steals, while Cal's Fana Fuqua tallied six saves for the Bears.

Next, the Bears will host UC Santa Barbara, Friday, April 6, at the Spieker Aquatics Complex, at 4 p.m.
