Berkeley -
The fourth ranked California Men's Water Polo team (4-0) continued
its bid to move up into the top slot in the country today, throttling two fellow UC
opponents by a combined score of 26-5.
First up for Cal today was UC Davis. Featuring a balanced attack and efforts in the
net, nine different Golden Bears put the ball in the net and goaltenders Russell
Bernstein and Tim Kates combined to pitch a shutout against the visiting Aggies.
When the smoke cleared, Cal had blanked UCD 11-0. Will Quist and Greg Panawek
scored 2 each for the Bears.
The Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz were the next challenger, and even though
the shutout streak was broken in the first quarter, Cal still won handily, 15-5. Led
by Cameron Thom and Alex Niehenske each scored three with Beau Schuster
adding two to make up the bulk of the Bears' scoring. Seeing action for the first time
this season in goal was Derek Schauffler, who entered the game in the second
period and performed well with 5 saves before giving way to Jasper Billings, who
was also seeing his first action of the season. For the Banana Slugs, Darren
Nelson led all scorers with four goals on the day.
Cal remains undefeated on the season with a 4-0 mark, with a win in their lone
conference match, a 7-6 thriller against UCSB yesterday afternoon.
After a week off, the Bears will be back in the pool, squaring off against
conference rivals Stanford and Pacific in Berkeley, on October 6 and 7
respectively.
