Cal Rugby Blows Out New Mexico State, 103-5

Feb. 17, 2002

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - In the second day of their New Mexico road trip, the Cal varsity rugby squad (6-0) battled the high altitude and windy conditions to come out with their second victory in as many days, defeating the Aggies, 103-5, Sunday afternoon.

After a physically tough match against New Mexico on Saturday, the first-team starting side took the day off and watched as the reserves put on a show in typical Cal fashion. The match wasn't even close from the start, as just three minutes into the contest fullback James Orlando crossed the try line for one of Cal's 16 tries of the day. This set the tone for a decisive victory and a mission complete.

"Overall our goal was two games, two victories, in two days," said assistant coach Tom Billups. "We are very pleased with this weekend's outcome."

After an atypical Cal performance versus New Mexico, the Bears played with more authority today, running with a sense of purpose on the attack. In fact, the Bears rattled of 84 straight points before giving up a try to the Aggies' squad in the 58th minute of the match.

Head coach Jack Clark was pleased with the performance and stated, "We appeared to be slightly more crisp today than we were on Saturday. New Mexico State was not one of the more organized sides that we'll play this year but the guys played some class rugby today."

Orlando finished the day with five tries, one penalty kick and nine two-point conversions for a total of 46 points. In addition to Orlando, senior Kevin Ambrosini and sophomore Andrew Blair were multiple scorers with two tries apiece.

Cal returns home to Berkeley on Wednesday, February 20 to face the University of Victoria at 3:30 p.m. on Witter Rugby Field.
