SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
The California men's gymnastics team (15-3) closed out its regular season on Saturday night with a first place finish out of the six team field at the tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara. In the win, the Bears posted a season-high team score of 214.200, as several individual season bests were established by Cal's competitors. The win sends a strong message to the rest of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, as the conference championships will be held in two weeks time.
US National Team member Cody Moore easily bested his previous season high, posting an eye-popping 55.450 all-around score. The world-class performance included four scores of nine or better, and three first place finishes. Among his top-drawer scores, Moore posted personal season-highs on the floor (9.550), pommel horse (9.725), rings (8.600) and parallel bars (9.525).
Not to be outdone, senior Tom Kutz posted a career high on the horizontal bar with a score of 9.650. His all-around score of 52.500 also established a season-best in his final regular season performance. Sophomore David Eaton turned in yet another solid performance, posting a 52.250 all-around, with high scores in the pommel horse (9.150) and the horizontal bar (9.150).
The Bears will be off this week before traveling to Colorado Springs to compete in the MPSF Championships on March 22 and 23.
