RENO, Nev. -
Senior winger Eric Andersen scored four tries Saturday, as the Cal rugby squad (10-0) continued its 10-game season unbeaten streak with their 66-15 manhandling of the Nevada-Reno Wolf Pack in Reno.
Despite the howling desert wind and the largest group of forwards that the Bears have faced this year, the contest wasn't even close from the start. Cal jumped off to an early 14-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the match, scoring on tries from sophomore Anthony Vontz and senior captain Kort Schubert. The Wolf Pack did manage to put up two unconverted tries in the ensuing ten minutes, but having to work through an extreme pressure from a Cal side that forced the Wolf Pack to work for every square inch. The Bears finished the half in style with two more tries from Andersen and one try apiece from Erik Larsen and Jason Forney, to cruise into the break with a 40-10 lead.
The second stanza saw Cal controlling the territory and possessions, outscoring Nevada 26-5. Andersen was impressive on the day with two tries in each half, equaling 20 points on the day. Senior Dave Guest was also solid as he battled the windy conditions and hit eight of 10 two-point conversions. But perhaps most impressive on the day was Forney, who notched two tries of his own as a starter.
"Jason had a strong outing today," said assistant coach Tom Billups. "He is continually competing for a starting spot on the backline and I am happy that he had a performance that he can be proud of. We traveled with 47 players, everybody played in the two victories and there were no injuries. So it was a successful Nevada road trip for the guys."
The Cal second side completed the two-game sweep with their 130-0 drubbing over the Wolf Pack second side.
The Bears return to action next weekend, March 16-17, in the Canterbury of New Zealand Invitational at Witter Rugby Field in Berkeley. Saturday will see Washington face Texas at 11:00 a.m. and the Bears square off against Norwich University at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, the consolation match will be held at 11:00 a.m. with the championship game to follow at 1:00 p.m.
