April 13, 2002
STANFORD, Calif. -
The fourth-ranked University of California women's water polo team dropped a 7-4 decision to the arch-rival No. 2 Stanford Cardinal Friday night at Avery Aquatics Center. With the loss, the Bears drop to 14-7 (7-3 MPSF), while the Cardinal improves to a near-perfect 17-1 (9-1 MPSF).
Julia Cesnik got the Bears on the scoreboard first with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter following a Stanford ejection. The Cardinal then answered with three straight goals from Margie Dingeldein and one from Brenda Villa to lead 4-1 at the half.
Dingeldein and Villa added scores to put Stanford up 6-1. Ericka Lorenz and Brenna Fleener netted goals for Cal in the fourth quarter, but a Kate Pettit score stopped the Bear rally with 2:31 left in the game. Cal's Chris Lane recorded the final goal of the game as Stanford held on 7-4.
Cal's trademark balanced offense saw four different players score a goal apiece. Dingeldein led all players with four goals for the Cardinal. Bear goalie Lauren Dennis recorded seven save in goal for the Bears, while Jackie Frank had 10 for Stanford.
The Bears return to Spieker Aquatics Complex tomorrow to challenge the San Jose State Spartans in Cal's final home match of 2002. Opening sprint is set for noon.
