Santa Barbara, Calif. - In the final match of the regular season, the Cal rugby team (15-0) traveled to Santa Barbara, Saturday afternoon, and kept their perfect record intact with a 118-3 dismantling of the UCSB Gauchos. Senior Dave Guest led the Bears in scoring with 34 points, hitting 12 of his 16 two-point conversions while running in two tries.

With the regional tournament coming up in a few weeks and facing a Gauchos team the Bears' knew little about, head coach Jack Clark was able to give some of the fringe players a chance at vying for starting spots. Most of the usual starters sat on the sideline only to witness a striking resemblance to themselves.

The Bears jumped out to a quick 45-0 start in the game's first 28 minutes. It wasn't until the 31st minute of the first half that the Gauchos would scrape the scoreboard for the first time ... and the last time. Freshman Ryan Donnelly started the scoring barrage with a try from 15m, blowing through multiple defenders. Junior John Willenborg ended the first half in much the same manner as it started, stiff-arming an opponent and sprinting in for the try from 20m. Cal sent seven different scorers into the tryzone in the half and went into the break with the commanding lead, 57-3.

The second half saw multiple substitutions and even more scoring. The Bears pounced all over the Gauchos, scoring 61 unanswered points. Senior flanker Jonathan Vickers entered the match in the 50th minute and made his presence known, scoring on a beautiful 40m breakaway just seven minutes later. Senior flyhalf Matt Viboch rounded out the Bears' solid performance with his 30m breakaway try to end the game in exclamatory fashion, 118-3.

The Bears will host the Pacific regional tournament, Saturday and Sunday April 20-21, at Witter Rugby Field in Berkeley. Cal will face Middle Tennessee State while Ohio State will face an undetermined opponent in the first round of action.
