The No. 11 Cal women's varsity eight raced to a third-place finish in the Jessop Whittier Cup event at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay, April 7. Despite finishing third to No. 1 Washington and No. 3 Ohio State, Cal solidified its position as one of the fastest women's eights in the country.
"I'm really pleased with today's performance," said coach Dave O'Neill. "We showed that we can race with the top crews in the country, but we need to develop more speed in the weeks ahead."
In the Jessop-Whittier Cup event, Washington was the early leader with Cal, Virginia and Ohio State knotted for second position. By the 1000, Cal had cut into UW's advantage closing to within four seats. The Buckeye's were two seats back of Cal and Virginia was a length off the Bears. Going through the 1500, Wahington eased back out to nearly a length advantage and Ohio State pulled even with the Bears. Washington drove to the line and took the title. The Buckeyes overtook Cal in the last 300 meters for the second-consecutive day to snare second. Cal was third followed by No. 13 Stanford, Notre Dame, No. 6 Virginia and Washington State.
The Cal women's JV eight led early out of the blocks and Washingotn quickly joined them at the front of the field. The Bears and the Huskies battled over the first 1000 meters with the Huskies leading the Bears by as musch as six seats. The two frontrunners couldn't shake Virginia which moved into contention for second position as the Huskies soldified their advantage. Over the last 500, the Cavaliers made a run at the Huskies, but settled for second. Cal was unable to counter the Virginia surge and finished third.
The women's collegiate novice event proved to be one of the colsest of the day as five of the top six boats in the race were within two lengths at the finish. With 750 meters down, Washington and Cal were the leaders with Virigina racing in third. Virginia closed on the frontrunners in the third 500 and Washington State and Oregon State joined the fray in the last 500. The Cougars were the fastest crew over the final 500 and took their first Crew Classic title. The Bears were edged by Virginia and finished fifth.
