WASHINGTON COACH LORENZO ROMAR

General Remarks:

"We certainly had our chances tonight. We had great opportunities we didn't take advantage of and down the stretch we lapsed mentally. We out-rebounded Cal 40-31 and had 20 offensive rebounds. You would think that we would come out with a victory. We just couldn't convert at times. A turning point was when Wrenn got an offensive foul when we were winning and the momentum changed like that. I give Cal credit. They are undefeated and their seniors kept their composure and fought hard."

On Cal's forward Amit Tamir

"It was difficult to block his shots because he shoots so high. Tonight's game reminded me of a tape against Kansas I saw of Cal earlier in the year. He got away from us and got his rhythm. I thought Wrenn did a nice job guarding him in the second half and Washington did a nice job guarding him in the first half."

On the Huskies still being in the game in the final minutes

"Our team has the confidence they can play and compete with any team. We need to mature to be able to finish the job, whether it is making the big shot or a defensive stop. We need to do that consistently. It is not if, but when this day comes, we will be a good team."

On Washington's Brandon Roy being declared eligible to play

"It was a great moment today when we learned that he could play.. As a coach, you pull for every player, but I pull for Brandon because he is a great person. During this whole process he has been patient and grown up. He has always wanted to play for UW; he bleeds purple and gold. It was great to see him in uniform tonight and for the program because we know he will play in the future. It is too early to determine if he will red shirt, though."

CALIFORNIA COACH BEN BRAUN

General Remarks

"He [Tamir] hit some big shots for us, he's a big time player, when it's time to hit shots, he hits shots. He even got undercut that last lay-up he made, crucial lay-up because the score was tight, and he finished and made the lay-up and I was really proud that he didn't pull back. I can't remember a game, in a long time, I told our team this, that we had so many offensive rebounds against us, and that almost did us in. We missed some opportunities at the free-throw line and we missed a lot of lay-upsŠit's called hearing footsteps, and worrying about your opponent, you got to do what you do. Give Washington credit what a great job they did on getting out, that's how they've been successful this year. When we handled it we did well, when we didn't we struggled."

On Washington

"They had a lot of quickness, they were getting the loose balls and long rebounds, we got very casual and didn't get long rebounds, it almost did us inŠagain give Washington credit. They're very scrappy, they're one of the quickest teams we've played all year long."

On the talent of the youth of the team

"I've really been impressed with their guys, their guys have played hard, I think Lorenzo's kids are playing really hard. I grabbed Nate after the game and said 'you guys played really hard, keep it up.' I just admire that as a coach; I admire teams that play hard, and I told him thatŠNate hit some shots on us too. He knocked some shots down, and you know that's a compliment to a team and a coaching staff. They play hard. That's why their team has been more successful; that's why they've given people trouble, and that's why they came back and beat USC, that was one heck of a comeback and they just kept staying after it."
