REDWOOD CITY -
California's oarsmen stroked to victories in the varsity eight, 2nd varsity eight and Freshman/novice categories over the weekend at Redwood Shores. The varsity eight and 2nd varsity eight completed victories over Wisconsin, Penn, and Princeton. The Freshman also defeated Wisconsin and Sacramento State in convincing fashion.
The first race of the contest for the Bears was also the closest. They defeated Wisconsin by 0.4 seconds. Cal was leading by four seats until the 1600, when the Badgers made a move and forced Cal up to a 43 stroke rate. Over that last stretch the Cal lead shrank from 4 seats, but the Bears ultimately held off the Badgers to take the slim victory.

CAL MEN'S CREW 2003: The oarsmen on the Cal men's crew are looking to rewrite the record books in 2003. To follow up national championships in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 would be a hard test for any team in any sport. These Bears are up to the task. Although they will prepare for competition one race at a time, the Golden Bears overall performance this season will draw the attention of the entire rowing world. The Bears have plainly shown that they are stronger, pull harder, and move their boat faster for 2000 meters than their opponents.
The 2003 varsity eight hopes to be part of what has become a Dynasty at Cal, going for their fifth straight national title. The varsity eight has lost only once in the past four seasons. They will be defending their Pac-10 and Intercollegiate Rowing Association titles. It is clear that the Bears' consistency has been attributed to their dedication, mental toughness, physical conditioning and maturity. These four benchmarks have defined Cal in the past, and will play a key role in winning a fifth championship.
