BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Amit Tamir scored a game-high 21 points, including
four 3-pointers in the final six minutes, to lead California to a 76-62 win
over Washington in the Pac-10 opener for both teams Friday night.
Leon Powe added 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds while Ayinde Ubaka
scored 13 points and dished out eight assists for California (5-5), which also
outrebounded the Huskies 42-29.
Tre Simmons scored 16 points and Bobby Jones added 15 for Washington (5-4),
which saw its two-game win streak snapped.
The Bears led by as many as 13 points in the first half but had to hold off
the pesky Huskies, who came back to tie the game at 51 midway through the
second half.
Shortly thereafter, Tamir took over for California. Hitting back-to-back
3-pointers from nearly the same spot on the floor, he provided the spark the
struggling Bears needed.
California, which hit just two shots over a nine-minute stretch in the
second half, then went on a 17-7 run to close out the game, with Tamir adding
two more 3-pointers to bury Washington.
Tamir, who was only shooting 20 percent from 3-point range heading into the
game, finished 6-of-9 from beyond the arc against the Huskies.
Overall California, which was ranked second-to-last in 3-point shooting
among all NCAA Division I schools, connected on 8 of 20 3-pointers.
