LOS ANGELES (AP) - T.J. Cummings scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 10
rebounds to lead UCLA to a 66-49 victory over California Thursday night.
Dijon Thompson added 14 points for the Bruins, who had lost eight of their
last nine coming into the game.
Amit Tamir scored 13 points for the Golden Bears, who had won five of their
last seven. Leon Powe added 10 points.
Cummings scored his first six points during an early 8-0 spurt that put UCLA
ahead 10-5 with 13:40 left in the first half.
California narrowed the deficit to 15-12, but the Bruins went on an 11-0 run
that expanded their lead to 26-12 with 7:23 left before halftime. Cummings
added another six points during that surge.
UCLA (11-11, 7-7 Pacific 10 Conference) made 14 of 28 shots in the first
half in building a 30-14 halftime lead.
The Bears missed 18 of 24 field-goal attempts and committed 11 turnovers in
scoring 14 first-half points, a season low.
California (11-11, 7-6) scored only two points in the final 10:31 of the
first half, and failed to score after Tamir's jumper with 7:02 left in the
half.
The Bruins expanded their lead to 25 points with 5:02 to play before
clearing the bench with 1:29 to play.
UCLA's Josiah Johnson missed Thursday night's game because of a bone bruise
and a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, which he injured
Monday in practice.
Johnson, who had played in 20 games this season, also will miss Saturday
night's game against No. 1 Stanford.
