No. 2 Cal Edged by No. 4 Oklahoma
Feb. 13, 2004
COLUMBUS, Ohio - It was supposed to be a showdown between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country, but it was the No. 4 rated Oklahoma Sooners who stole the show, defeating the No. 2 California Golden Bears, 219.600-218.175. No. 1 Ohio State finished third with a final score of 217.400.
Despite the loss, the Bears accumulated their highest point total of the year, 218.175. Cal's previous season-high was, 216.625, recorded against Stanford at home.
The Bears stayed true to form, winning the pommel horse with a point total of 36.150. But Oklahoma was able to win three of six events (floor excercise, parallel bar and high bar) to pull off the upset over the nation's two top rated teams.
Cal was led by freshman Randall Heflin and senior David Eaton, who both finished with scores of 9.450 and 9.200, respectively, in pommel horse.
Heflin also ended the night with a 53.150 in the all-around competition, finishing in second place behind Randy Monahan of Ohio State (54.650).
Graham Ackerman had another strong night as well, finishing the vault with a 9.625 and the high bar with a 9.650.
The Bears return home next week to face Stanford and Arizona State on Friday, Feb. 20, in Haas Pavillion, at 7 p.m.
