Feb. 14, 2004

BERKELEY, Calif. - In a very intense early season match-up, two West Coast schools battled it out with the Pepperdine Waves coming out on top in the end, 4-3. With the loss Cal falls to 1-3 on the season.

In a match that came down to the wire, Cal was not able to hold on to leads in two of the final three matches, which proved to be the difference.

After winning two of three doubles matches and splitting the first four singles matches, the Bears entered the third and final set of the three remaining matches up 3-2.

In those final three matches Wayne Wong was able to continue his winning ways, defeating No. 31 Calle Hansen, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. But senior Balazs Veress and freshman Tyler Browne were not as lucky, falling in two hard-fought matches, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, and 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, respectively.

The Golden Bears continue their season next weekend, as they open up Pac-10 play against Stanford.
