The fifth-ranked Golden Bear gymnastic team dropped their season-opening meet, held at Haas Pavilion, to No. 6 Stanford, 216.275 - 214.200.
Senior Jay Yee, a 2004 NCAA finalist in the still rings, finished first on the pommel horse today, with a score of 9.550.
Freshman Tim McNeill, in his first collegiate competition, made an immediate impact, recording three scores of 9.400 or higher. McNeill finished second on pommel horse with a 9.400, fourth in the rings with a 9.400 and second on parallel bars with a 9.450.
Fellow freshman Tyler Block came away with a third place finish on the parallel bars with a score of 9.300, and finished fifth on the rings at 9.350.
The Bears (0-1) return to action this Saturday in Palo Alto, at the Cardinal Open. The meet is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
