Young Bears Defeat UC Santa Cruz 86-0

Feb. 3, 2005

BERKELEY - Cal's freshman lineup routed the Santa Cruz first 15, 86-0, on Thursday in Berkeley. This victory improves the Golden Bears' record to 5-0 leading into this Saturday's league fixture with the Chico State Wildcats. Freshman backs Scott Kidd and Ron Yokubaitis led the scoring for the Bears - Kidd touched down a hat trick and "Yogi" had a try, a penalty and nine conversions.

Santa Cruz competed well in the early exchanges, but eventually the young Bears gained the upper hand in both the forwards and the backs. The Cal scrum bullied its counterpart, creating a launch pad for the Bears' backs to attack from while disrupting any possession for the visitors.

Kidd and Jason Lee accounted for five of the six tries in the first half, with the sixth coming from, skipper on the day, Pat King. Lee's second, the last try of the half, followed a bruising 60-meter run by flanker Kyle Balough from a misplaced kick off, leaving the halftime score 40-0.

The Bears were straight back on the job following the intermission as Nick Yancey scored the first of his two tries just minutes into the second half. The Bears now had all the momentum and were running tries in from all over. The most exciting touch down of the evening was scored by full back Connor O'Brien following another misplaced kick off. Fly half Logan Howard caught the errant kick and took a slashing run through the Santa Cruz defense, several missed tackles later and deep in enemy territory Howard gave a well-timed pass to O'Brien who only had a few meters to go for the try. The final score was Cal 86, UC Santa Cruz 0.
