DAVIS, CA - Cal sophomore Elsie Windes scored one goal in each of the four quarters, and junior Allison Gold added two more scores, as the No. 6 ranked Golden Bears defeated UC Davis, 8-2, in Cal's season-opener Wednesday at Schaal Aquatics Center on the UC Davis campus.

The Aggies fell to 6-4 on the season. Sophomore Cassie Schaefer accounted for both of the UC Davis goals, converting 6-on-5 opportunities in each of the second and third periods.

After nearly five minutes of scoreless play between the two teams, Cal erupted for three goals in the first quarter. Gold fired in the first goal at the 2:13 mark, then Windes delivered from six meters out for the second score. The Bears' Brittani Llorente later beat the clock with an eight-meter shot to extend Cal's lead to 3-0.

UC Davis finally reached the scoring column when Aggie freshman Mary Lowe assisted Schaefer on the man-up goal, cutting the lead to 3-1. However, Cal responded with junior Lauren McGee's counterattack with 2:21 left in the half, then extended its lead to 5-1 when Katie Card assisted Windes on a two-meter score at 1:01.

Windes and Gold added two more Bear goals early in the third quarter, stretching the winning margin to six goals. With 2:22 remaining in the third, Schaefer converted on a 6-on-5 situation, but Windes sealed the match by scoring her fourth goal of the contest in the final period.

Cal used three goalies in the match, with junior Alex Feune de Colombi recording four saves, redshirt freshman Brittany Mohr one save and true freshman Heather Stuart had three saves. Sophomore Lina Moore had 11 saves for UC Davis.

Both the Bears and the Aggies return to action this weekend at the Stanford Invitational. Cal will open the tournament by facing Indiana at 12 p.m. and defending national champion USC at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Avery Aquatics Complex.
