UCLA gymnasts won every individual title and teammates Kristen Maloney and Tasha Schwikert shared the Pac-10 all-around crown as the No. 3 Bruins (197.100) captured the 2005 conference team championship, Saturday at Haas Pavilion.
No. 19 Arizona (195.925) narrowly edged out No. 12 Oregon State (195.900) for second place. Stanford (194.600) finished in fourth, followed by No. 23 Washington (194.425) and No. 25 Arizona (192.975). Cal (163.550), which fielded just six healthy competitors due to injuries, finished in seventh.
Led by Maloney's championship score of 9.925, the Bruins opened the meet with an event-high 49.300 on vault. On the next rotation, Schwikert captured the bars title with the only 10.000 of the day. On beam, Maloney shared the top mark with Arizona State's Ashley Kelly at 9.950. UCLA gymnasts closed the meet by taking three of the top four places on floor, led by Maloney's 9.975. Kate Richardson and Schwikert tied for second at 9.900 with Oregon State's Heather Justus.
Maloney and Schwikert finished with a 39.700 to capture first place in the all-around. Kelly (39.375) finished in third.
The host Bears, though depleted, had a few exceptional performances on the afternoon. Senior Lauren Shipp, in her final meet at Haas Pavilion, posted a 9.875 on beam, setting a new season best and nearly eclipsing her top career score of 9.900.
Freshman Siobhan Luce tied for seventh on vault with a new career-best 9.850. She also finished 10th in the all-around with a 38.500.
Powered by Shipp's 9.875, the Bears' top-scoring event was beam. Their 48.650 fell just shy of the season-high mark of 48.750.
"I am extremely pleased with how the ladies preformed as we had no falls today," said Cal head coach Cari DuBois. "We did our best and that was the goal coming into the competition short one gymnast on three of the four events."
The Bears will now wait to see if any of their gymnasts have qualified for the NCAA Regionals. Announcements are expected to be made within the coming week.
