LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 Cal women's swimming and diving team improves to 10-0 (6-0 Pac-10) after defeating host No. 7 UCLA 154.5-145.5 at the Men's Gym Pool. The Golden Bears won the final event of the meet - 200-yard freestyle relay - to take home the overall victory Saturday.
The Golden Bears, who won eight events overall, clocked a pool-record and meet-record time of 1:32.15 in the final relay with the team of freshman Jessica Hardy, junior Lauren Andrews, senior Helen Silver and sophomore Emily Silver. The Bruins placed second in 1:32.62.
Cal also set a pool record in the 200 medley relay, with Hardy and juniors Sherry Tsai, Annie Babicz and Erin Reilly finishing in 1:41.57.
"I am really pleased with the weekend," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "We were challenged both days, and the team responded with different people each time. We did a great job working together, taking it one event at a time."
Helen Silver, Emily Silver and Jessica Hardy each won two events, with Helen taking first in the 100 back (54.38) and 200 back (1:58.70) races, Emily placing first in the 50 free (23.48) and 100 free (50.82) events, and Hardy winning the 100 breast (1:02.32) and 200 breast (2:16.88) events. Helen's time in the 100 back is a season best.
"We picked up wins with the people we needed, but our depth was really big today," McKeever said.
The Bears went 1-2-3 in the 100 free, with Andrews taking second (51.20) and Sherry Tsai placing third (51.33).
Freshman Lara Pease's finishes in the 100 back (4th, 56.22) and 200 back (5th, 2:02.97) were key for Cal's victory.
The Bruins, who had pulled an upset over No. 4 Stanford Friday, fall to 7-2, 3-2 Pac-10.
Cal concludes its dual meet season when the Bears visit Stanford on Saturday Feb. 11. That meet begins at noon in Palo Alto. Cal went undefeated in dual meet competition in the 2004 season, finishing with the Bears' first victory over Stanford since 1978.
