BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -Freshman Ryan Anderson had 20 points and eight rebounds in his California debut and the Bears overcame a sluggish first half to beat Utah Valley State 60-47 on Wednesday night.

Anderson, a 6-foot-10 forward, opened the game with a 3-pointer and didn't stop shooting until Cal secured its ninth win in 11 home-openers under coach Ben Braun. Anderson went 5-for-10 from the floor, including three 3-pointers.

Ayinde Ubaka added 18 points for the Bears, while Omar Wilkes had 10 points. DeVon Hardin - expected to be Cal's primary scoring threat this season - had nine points and six rebounds.

Cal won despite shooting just 33.3 percent in the first half and going nearly seven minutes without a basket during one stretch.

Ryan Toolson scored 14 points to lead Utah Valley State. Jordan Brady added 13, all in the first half, but spent most of the second half on the bench in foul trouble. The Wolverines shot just 34.6 percent and committed 19 turnovers in losing for the first time this season.

Cal, which went 20-11 in 2005, opened the game with a 13-0 run when the Wolverines missed their first 12 shots. Utah Valley State (2-1) pulled within 29-21 at halftime before the Bears went on a 28-10 run to open the second half and put the game away,

Anderson had 10 points during the run, including consecutive 3-pointers that gave Cal a 51-31 lead. The Bears led by as many as 24 against the smaller, slower Wolverines in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Cal went just 3 of 12 from 3-point range but made up for it by making 25 of 32 free throws.

The 47 points allowed by the Bears was the lowest for a Cal opponent in a season opener since Saint Mary's managed just 44 in the 1964-65 opener.
