General comments:
"Our guys had a lot of respect for Sonoma State coming into tonight's game. I thought defensively we were very solid against them early. That's the message we want to give teams this year. We held Sonoma State off its percentages and because of that we had some fast-break opportunities."

"Our guys were playing well together. We had to establish ourselves early today. Our young guys are still learning and they still have a way to go but they did some good things for us."

"We've got some work to do. We didn't do a good job cleaning off the offensive glass and getting to the free throw line."

On the Bears' transition game:
"I thought our team got up and down the floor and sometimes made better decisions than others, but I was happy our team was rebounding. If we don't give up offensive rebounds, I think we'll score some baskets off transition. We've got a lot of guys that are cut out to play the transition game. If we rebound, we really have the ability to take advantage of that."

On preparing for Cal's season opener against Utah Valley State:
"This was a good starting point for our team. Now we've got to go back and work on some things. I like that we have a two week period to work on what we need to work on to get better."

On freshman forward Ryan Anderson:
"Ryan has been steadily leading our team in rebounding and that's why he was in there tonight. He earned his spot in practice. I like that we have some depth there in the post. Ryan has a really good feel for the game. He's pretty comfortable out there and he knows what he's doing. His teammates have faith in him."

On junior center DeVon Hardin's left hook shot:
"He's worked really hard on his left in practice and tonight was a good sign. He's really become comfortable with that shot. I think he provided a lot of energy and a spark tonight."

On freshman center Taylor Harrison:
"I think Taylor posts up as well as any player we have. I was happy to see him in there trying to take charge."
