No. 2 Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats UC Santa Cruz, 23-4; No. 17 Santa Clara, 18-8

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (24-3, 5-1 MPSF) scored 41 goals in two matches with 16 different players scoring as the Golden Bears defeated UC Santa Cruz, 23-4 (10 a.m. match) and No. 17-ranked Santa Clara, 18-8 (2 p.m. match), in a pair of non-conference contests Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Against UC Santa Cruz, Cal had 12 players scored, led by junior Zac Monsees four goals, and three goals apiece from sophomore Trent Calder and redshirt freshman Grant Mitchell. Sophomore goalie Matt Hillard collected seven saves with a steal and an assist, all in the first two quarters of the match. Other top statistical leaders for the Bears against the Slugs were Monsees with five assists, and senior John Mann and redshirt freshman Mike Sample with two ejections earned.

Versus Santa Clara, Cal's top scorers were All-American Mann, senior Brian Bacharach and sophomore Frank Reynolds with three goals apiece. Monsees also added a pair of goals. Eleven different Bears scored against the Broncos.

Cal will next travel to Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 11 for a 12 p.m. MPSF match in Stockton, and will then visit UC Davis at noon, Sunday, Nov. 12 in a non-conference match in Davis.
