Bears Take Second in Stanford Open

The highlight of the Stanford Open for the California men's gymnastics team was junior Tim McNeill's performance on pommel horse. The reigning NCAA champion on pommel horse, won the event Saturday night at Burnham Pavilion, with a score of 9.45. The Golden Bears as a team ended the night with a final score of 207.500, good enough to take second place. They beat Nebraska, Washington and a pair of all-star teams. Stanford won the event (209.650).
The top all-around performer for the Bears was junior Colin Christ (42.600), as he finished 13th on the leader board. His best event score of the night was an 8.900 on parallel bars. He tied for fifth in the event. Christ also tied for fifth place on high bar with a score of 8.750.
Cal found the most success on parallel bars. McNeill finished second with a score of 9.050. Right behind McNeill, tying for third, was sophomore Kyson Bunthuwong (9.000). Junior Tyler Block tied with Bunthuwong, with a 9.000 as well.
Freshman Bryan Del Castillo had another strong performance on floor exercise, finishing second (9.400).
Junior Mark Freeman only competed in two events, but notched a fourth-place finish on high bar (8.800).

Cal returns to action on Thursday, February 8 in Las Vegas, Nev. for the Winter Cup (7:30pm). The three-day event continues through Saturday.
